H. A. Lozier had resigned from the Lozier Motor Company in 1912 (see Lozier) and decided to build a new car with a name using his own initials, H.A.L. The H. A. Lozier Company was established and a prototype H.A.L. Twelve was shown at the New York Automobile Show in January 1916. The H.A.L. Twelve was powered by a 40 hp V-12 engine and was available as a two-passenger roadster and a seven-passenger touring car.

Lozier left the company in September 1916 and the company was reorganised as the Hal Motor Car Company. Initially, all seemed to be going well with the Hal Twelve and two hundred were produced by October 1916. From 1917, the Hal Twelve was offered in a wide range of body styles but material shortages resulting from the First World War started to cause serious problems and by February 1918 the Hal Motor Car Company was finished.

Emblems

The H.A. Lozier Company did not settle on a clear logo in its advertising.

A HAL Twelve advertisement appearing on January 6, 1916, when the prototype HAL Twelve was being displayed at car shows, has no representation of a HAL logo, see example below:

However, by January 24, 1916, HAL Twelve advertisements showed a HAL logo, which does not appear to have been used for an emblem, see example below:

By February 1916, the HAL Twelve logo had developed further, see HAL Twelve advertisement shown below. This logo also does not appear to have been used on an emblem.

The following HAL Twelve advertisement from early 1916 shows a new HAL logo:

This HAL Twelve logo was used to produce a HAL Twelve radiator emblem. This is the white and blue enamel HAL Twelve radiator emblem shown above at the top of this post and again below. This HAL Twelve radiator emblem is very rare.

Emblem collectors should beware as there are reproduction HAL Twelve emblems, see red and white enamel example shown below:

The following HAL Twelve advertisement from April/May 1916 shows a different logo:

The H.A.L. logo shown in this advertisement looks more like a hub emblem and, in fact, was used on early H.A.L. hub caps, see example below:

There was a slight change in the HAL Twelve logo in about August 1916, see example shown below:

The logo was changed slightly again in early November 1916 at the time of change to the HAL Motor Car Company, see example shown below:

There was yet another change of logo in January 1917, see example shown below:

However, I have found no examples of a HAL Twelve radiator emblem with a design based on any of these logo variations. More unusually, I have also not found any radiator emblems with this or a similar style of design and inscribed "The HAL Motor Car Company". It is possible that such a radiator emblem does exist and, if an original example could be found, it would be extremely rare. If you have details of such an emblem, please let me know, in order to update this post.

There was a change of logo to a script using the words "The Hal Twelve" after about March 1917, see example shown below where this script logo is used together with one of the earlier logos:

In August 1917, the HAL Twelve radiator emblem was changed to a completely new design made by Maximillian Fyscher. This new radiator emblem was widely publicised in the newspapers with a detailed explanation of the meaning of the emblem.

This is the green and white enamel HAL Twelve radiator emblem shown below, which also shows the "The Hal Twelve" script logo. This Hal Twelve radiator emblem is extremely rare.

The following Hal Twelve radiator emblem with a white central stripe is also extremely rare:

There is also a black, white, pale blue, green and red enamel variation of this Hal Twelve radiator emblem, see example below. This Hal Twelve radiator emblem is extremely rare.

The following detail taken from a Hal Twelve advertisement explains the meaning of this new Hal Twelve radiator emblem:

Emblem collectors should beware, as there are reproduction HAL Twelve emblems in a variety of colors, see example shown below. These reproduction HAL Twelve radiator emblems lack the detail in depth of the original emblem and contain detailed errors in design.

The following "Harry Newman De Luxe Special" emblem has some similarities with the Hal Twelve emblem but with a stork in place of an eagle, perhaps representing delivery of something precious. This Harry Newman emblem appears in some early auto emblem collections, including the Swigart emblem collection. This Harry Newman emblem is very rare.

The Harry Newman organisation was a large automobile dealership located on "Automobile Row" in Chicago and handled Hal Twelve sales, see the following photo of an advertising billboard recommending "The Hal Twelve":

There is no evidence that the Harry Newman organisation manufactured a car, although it is possible that Harry Newman upgraded some available Hal Twelve cars after the Hal Motor Car Company collapsed and offered these for sale as Harry Newman De Luxe Specials. However, it is understood that Harry Newman also offered an auto repair and maintenance service and the "Harry Newman Special" emblem may be related to a service deal as part of their Hal Twelve sales. If you have better information about the Harry Newman Special emblem, please let me know, in order to update this post.

The following HAL Twelve emblem, marked "The HAL Motor Car Co." and showing a double six domino piece with red dots, uses the same "The Hal Twelve" script as the Hal emblems shown above, which indicates a 1917-1918 date. This HAL Twelve emblem is unused and is extremely rare and may have been made just before the HAL Twelve ceased production.
