The Mort was initially built by the Meteor Motor Car Company as a smaller companion to the Meteor (see Meteor (2)) and, like the Meteor, the Mort was a funeral car, so the Mort was appropriately named, as the word "mort" is French for "dead". The Mort Motor Car Company was established by the end of 1917.

The Mort was powered by a 40 hp four-cylinder engine and had hydraulic four-wheel brakes in 1924, the last year of Mort production. The Mort was listed until 1926 but these later vehicles were Mort bodies fitted to four-cylinder Dodge chassis for use as funeral cars or ambulances.

Emblems

The first Mort funeral cars carried a blue and white enamel radiator emblem with the Meteor Motor Car Company name at the top, see example above at the top of this post. This Mort radiator emblem is rare.

After the establishment of the Mort Motor Car Company, the Mort radiator emblem was changed to include the new company name, see example below. This Mort radiator emblem is scarce.
