The Otis Elevator Company was contracted in 1908 by the Sultan Motor Company to build the prototype and early production models of their 12/15 hp four-cylinder Sultan motor car, which was made in touring, landaulet and runabout body styles. The Sultan used many parts imported from France made in metric sizes, which caused serious problems for American mechanics.
There are some reports that, with the experience of building the Sultan, Otis built a few cars of their own based on the Sultan design but there is no confirmed evidence for this. If this did happen, it did not continue for long and an Otis automobile did not go into production, as the new wave of skyscraper building in America in the first decade of the twentieth century gave Otis a much more profitable market on which to concentrate its efforts.
Emblem
The Otis emblem shown above is similar in size to the Sultan radiator emblem and is a candidate for an Otis radiator emblem but this is unlikely and cannot be confirmed. If this is indeed an Otis automobile radiator emblem, it would be extremely rare.
