Two possibilities have been put forward by Beverly Rae Kimes in the Standard Catalog of American Cars. The Barnhard-Briggs Automobile Company planned to build an automobile in Woodville, Massachusetts in 1907 and staged a contest with a prize for the best name for the car. There was a general store in Woodville called Farrar's Market and it is possible that the car name chosen was Farrar.
An alternative possibility relates to a company in Woodville that built fire truck bodies. This business was started by a man named Farrar in 1934.
